A Critical Review of GLBTQA and Study Abroad Workshop:
A Student-Developed Pilot Program at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities
Abstract
This paper is a literature-based critical review of the GLBTQA and Study Abroad Workshop, a new study abroad pre-departure program for students in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. Until this Workshop, in-person study abroad pre-departure programs did not exist at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities for the LGBT audience. Through the lens of study abroad, and LGBT development literature, this paper reviews the strengths of the Workshop in addressing the diverse and unique needs of the LGBT community as its members participate in study abroad programs. This paper also shows that the implementation of such programs on a campus provides a valuable resource for students, while also bridging the gap between LGBT student services and study abroad programs.

Summary
This poster was presented at the NAFSA Conference in May 2012. It summarizes the literature, implementation process, and review of the workshop when it was piloted in November 2011. The poster also presents and describes the six components of the workshop.
